Classroom makeovers

Milpitas Unified School District teachers got help with classroom makeovers for the new school year Sept. 13, when 22 teachers were each awarded $500 American Express gift card. The district made the donations in partnership with the Great Mall, the Rotary Club of Milpitas, Kiwanis of Milpitas and the Milpitas Community Education Endowment.

“The Milpitas Unified School District is pleased to recognize these teachers’ hard work with the help of Great Mall and our community partners,” Superintendent Cheryl Jordan said in a statement. “This initiative will help create a more engaging environment for our students.”

This classroom makeover program was part of Great Mall’s wider back-to-school efforts in 2022, including the “Do Good with Denim” drive in August, which benefited Salvation Army Silicon Valley.

NAMI Walk set

The annual fundraising and awareness event presented by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), known locally as NAMI Santa Clara County, is set for Oct. 1 at San Jose History Park.

Every year, NAMIWalks Your Way Silicon Valley raises funds for NAMI’s free programs and amplifies awareness to eliminate stigma around mental heath issues.

This year, the keynote speaker is San Francisco Giant Drew Robinson. Honorary chairpersons are Santa Clara County Supervisor Susan Ellenberg and BrainsWay CEO Dr. Chris Von Jako.

To register for NAMIWalks Your Way, visit namiwalks.org/siliconvalley. There is no registration fee, but fundraising is encouraged. Participants raising at least $100 receive an event T-shirt. One hundred percent of funds raised support NAMI Santa Clara County’s free local mental health programs, resources and services.
