BERKELEY — A 15-year-old student was in Juvenile Hall after his arrest on suspicion of a pair of charges following a foot chase from Berkeley High School’s campus, authorities said.

In a statement, police said officers responded at 11:53 a.m. Wednesday to reports of a downtown fight involving Berkeley High students. After officers arrived, they learned that two students threatened others with a handgun. Soon after, a school resource officer worked with staff to identify the pair.

When officers later learned the pair were on campus, they went to talk to them, but the students fled from them into and out of a campus building and onto Milvia and Kittredge streets, police said.

Officers finally chased the pair down near Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way, and a search of one student’s backpack yielded a BB gun with a steel side, polymer frame and other traits making it resemble a handgun.

Police said the student, who was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a replica firearm and having a weapon on campus, did not attend Berkeley High.
