SAN JOSE – Just five days into the new year, a second person has been killed in a hit-and-run in San Jose.

The collision, which involved a vehicle and a bicyclist, was reported at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday near Queens Lane and Old Bayshore Highway, the San Jose Police Department said in a social media post.

The bicyclist was taken to an area hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said.

No other information was immediately available.

The death marked the city’s second roadway fatality of the new year. On Sunday night, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run near South White Road and East Hills Drive.

In 2021, the city recorded 60 roadway fatalities, matching a two-decade peak also reached in 2019 and 2015. Police last year investigated 14 roadway fatalities and arrested at least five people.

Police asked people to avoid the area of Wednesday night’s hit-and-run while they conducted an investigation.
