No. 1 Serra 38, St. Ignatius 19
The top-ranked team in the Bay Area News Group’s Top 25 built a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Petelo Gi scored three touchdowns and quarterback Dominique Lampkin added two rushing touchdowns. All five Serra six-pointers came via the run. Place-kicker Leonardo Galindo provided one of the game’s highlights with a 47-yard field goal in the second quarter. The Padres (7-0, 5-0 West Catholic Athletic League) visit Sacred Heart Cathedral at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco next Friday before hosting St. Francis on Nov. 6. St. Ignatius is 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the WCAL. The Wildcats have lost five of their last six. — Mike Lefkow
No. 2 St. Francis 44, No. 12 Bellarmine 24
St. Francis took command in the second quarter and went on to defeat rival Bellarmine for the sixth consecutive time as Viliami Teu rushed for 276 yards and four touchdowns to lead the way. Darren Sabedra has the details here.
No. 3 De La Salle 48, San Ramon Valley 14
De La Salle, playing on the road in Danville, built a 35-7 halftime advantage on its way to a third consecutive victory. For more on the Spartans’ victory, go here.
No. 4 Pittsburg 50, Deer Valley 6
Quarterback Jaden Rashada threw five touchdown passes, bringing his season total to 18, as Pittsburg improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Bay Valley Athletic League. Zack Card caught two of the TD passes and Rashid Williams had one. Two of Rashada’s scoring tosses went to senior Rick Camacho Jr. They were his first touchdowns of the season, according to Pittsburg’s stats on MaxPreps. It was Senior Night, and coach Vic Galli made it a point to start as many seniors as possible. Linebackers Jakobe Harmon and Cameron Clanton each had 10 tackles. Harmon also had a sack and two tackles for loss. Deer Valley (2-6, 0-3) has lost five in a row after starting the season 2-1. — Mike Lefkow
No. 9 Menlo-Atherton 38, Terra Nova 7
Menlo-Atherton, playing on the road Thursday in Pacifica, scored the first 35 points on its way to a sixth consecutive victory. Jalen Moss scored on two long TD passes from Matt MacLeod and Dane Fifita scored on TD runs of 41 and 5 yards to lead the way. Joseph Flood’s short TD run made it 28-0 and Juan Pulido’s 35-yard field goal capped the scoring for M-A, which improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division. The Bears return home next Friday to play Burlingame, which entered this weekend undefeated. Terra Nova fell to 4-4, 3-3. — Darren Sabedra
No. 10 Monte Vista 27, No. 7 California 22
Monte Vista got off to a quick start on its home field and held off California in this East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division game. Phil Jensen has the recap here.
No. 11 McClymonds 54, Fremont-Oakland 0
Coach Michael Peters was back on the sidelines for McClymonds, and the Warriors welcomed him by improving to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Oakland Athletic League. Peters missed last week’s win over Oakland after testing positive for Covid-19. Quarterback Dreyan Paul connected on nine of 17 passes for 151 yards and two TDs. He also rushed for 62 yards and two more scores. Jaivian Thomas had 137 rushing yards and reached the end zone for times. Jay’Vion Cole had two catches for 58 yards and a touchdown. He also intercepted a pass. Fremont is 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the OAL. — Mike Lefkow
No. 14 Menlo 42, Capuchino 0
Sergio Beltran passed for five touchdowns and ran for one as Menlo stayed undefeated (8-0, 4-0 PAL Ocean). Beltran set the single-season school record for touchdown passes with 40, breaking the old mark of 37 set by John Paye in 1982 and Jack Heneghan in 2013. Menlo took control of the game early, leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime. Carter Jung caught two touchdown passes and now has 15 touchdowns this season. Bob Enright added two touchdown receptions for the Knights. Menlo’s defense was also outstanding as it gave up zero points for the second straight game (last week, Aragon scored on a blocked punt). Menlo has limited six opponents to seven points or less this season and has not allowed an opponent more than 21 points. The Knights have won eight straight league games over two seasons. Capuchino fell to 4-4, 2-2. — Phil Jensen
No. 15 Las Lomas 48, Miramonte 29
Frank Payne rushed for five touchdowns as Las Lomas remained tied with Benicia for the Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division lead. Las Lomas built a 21-7 cushion in the first quarter and held a 31-21 advantage at halftime. The Knights (6-2, 3-0 DAL Foothill) scored the first 17 points of the second half to put the game away. Nick Barrett was busy for Las Lomas as he kicked two field goals and six PATs. Jermaine Land had the final touchdown for visiting Las Lomas. Luke Duncan passed for 301 yards and four touchdowns for Miramonte (5-2, 1-2) and also rushed for 61 yards. Tyler Dutto had nine catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns for the Matadors. Las Lomas plays host to Campolindo next Friday and then closes its regular season at Benicia on Nov. 5. — Phil Jensen
No. 17 Benicia 45, Acalanes 33
Visiting Benicia won this high-scoring encounter to remain tied for first in the Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division. Benicia (6-2, 3-0) led 27-26 at the end of three quarters but was able to hold off the Dons (4-4, 0-3). Benicia quarterback Tyson Wallace threw for three touchdowns and rushed for one. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 247 yards and no interceptions. Simeon Harris had 12 of those receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Janari Boone added 114 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Acalanes sophomore Paul Kuhner scored on kickoff returns of 97 and 90 yards. The Dons’ Luke Souza threw three touchdown passes, including two to Dante Montgomery, who had six receptions for 113 yards. Souza completed 13 of 23 passes for 211 yards and no interceptions. — Phil Jensen
Half Moon Bay 42, No. 18 Burlingame 41
Quarterback William Moffitt spun and fought his way to the goal line on a two-point try in overtime to give Half Moon Bay a dramatic victory and send Burlingame to its first defeat. Vytas Mazeika was in Burlingame and has every twist and turn of the wild night in this story.
No. 20 Foothill 24, No. 19 Dublin 10
Foothill got long second-half touchdown runs from Tony Schillaci and quarterback Nick Walsh to beat Dublin. The Falcons improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the East Bay Athletic League Valley Division, and possibly secured a top-four seed in Division II of the North Coast Section playoffs. Schillaci broke loose for a 40-yard TD run in the third quarter to boost Foothill’s four-point halftime lead to 14-3. Walsh raced 80 yards on what was supposed to be a quarterback sneak to give the Falcons a 24-10 advantage late in the fourth quarter. If Foothill can beat Granada next Friday in its regular-season final, it would finish 8-2 and could be seeded as high as third when the NCS playoff brackets are announced on Nov. 7. Only San Ramon Valley and Rancho Cotate have higher rankings from the Calpreps.com computer than Foothill among D-II teams. Rancho Cotate plays its final two games against North Bay powers Cardinal Newman and Windsor, so victories aren’t assured. Dublin (5-3, 1-1) will be favored to beat Livermore and Dougherty Valley in its final two games, but it will have to fend off Campolindo and San Leandro to be seeded in the upper half of the bracket. — Mike Lefkow
No. 21 Campolindo 35, Alhambra 6
Campolindo remained in the hunt for a Diablo Athletic League-Foothill title, scoring the game’s first 28 points. The Cougars (5-3, 2-1) also unleashed their best passing performance of the season, with QB Dashiell Weaver completing 13 of 15 passes for 204 yards and four TDs. Weaver threw touchdown passes of 60 and 4 yards to Robbie Mascheroni, 29 yards to Will Monkarsh and 14 yards to Scott Linden. Max Rittman completed Campo’s scoring with a 30-yard run. Alhambra’s (2-6, 0-3) only score came on a 22-yard pass from Daniel Delgado to Drake Costaflis. It ended a 97-yard drive after Bobby Boyd pounced on a Campo fumble at the Alhambra 3. Campo still trails Benicia and Las Lomas in the DAL standings. The Cougars visit Las Lomas next Friday, then wrap up their regular season Nov. 5 at home against Miramonte. If Campo splits the next two games, it should have no trouble making the North Coast Section Division II playoffs. — Mike Lefkow
No. 22 San Leandro 47, Moreau Catholic 0
Demetrius Freeney passed for 170 yards and Devan Daniels scored three touchdowns to lead San Leandro to the MVAL/WACC Foothill Division victory. Daniels scored twice on the ground and once on a reception. Defensively for San Leandro (5-3, 2-1), Ferrari Miller grabbed an interception, Kenshin Abad recovered a fumble and Khalil Golden had a sack on the Pirates’ first defensive play. Moreau Catholic is 0-7, 0-2. — Phil Jensen
Milpitas 35, No. 25 Homestead 7
In one of the bigger surprises Friday night, Milpitas won convincingly, outscoring Homestead 21-0 in the second half. The Trojans entered the game at 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, but quarterback/defensive back Ty Egorerua had a game he won’t soon forget, intercepting a pass, taking a kickoff 92 yards to the house and rushing for 80 yards. Dominic Alvarado added two TDs for the Trojans. But it was the defense that stood out for Milpitas, which won its second straight. Homestead managed only 126 yards of total offense. Its only touchdown came on a blocked field goal attempt in the second quarter. Milpitas had allowed 28.4 points per game in its first seven contests. Homestead (4-4, 2-2) still has a pretty good shot at finishing .500. Milpitas finishes with Palo Alto and Los Gatos. Palo Alto edged Mountain View on Friday and Los Gatos is 8-0 and has beaten Monterey Trail, Liberty and Wilcox by at least three touchdowns. — Mike Lefkow
East Bay
Bishop O’Dowd 31, Piedmont 8
Bishop O’Dowd, playing on the road, trailed 8-7 at halftime but shut out the Highlanders in the second half to even its overall record at 4-4. Bishop O’Dowd scored in the first half on a 40-yard pass from Ty Jones to Sean Bullard. Matt White had a huge second half for the Dragons with three rushing touchdowns, including two on 40-plus-yard runs. Mike Cooley played well defensively for O’Dowd and also had one of three blocked punts on the night for the Dragons. Joe Matthew and John Marcone had the others. Piedmont fell to 1-6 overall in this nonleague game. — Phil Jensen
Tennyson 50, San Lorenzo 0
Salesi Moala rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns and Taeshaun Lyons reached the end zone on a 50-yard catch and a 97-yard punt return as visiting Tennyson remained undefeated. The Lancers led 30-0 at halftime in a game played with a running clock from the second quarter on. Tennyson (8-0, 5-0 MVAL/WACC Shoreline Division) has won 12 consecutive games over two seasons. San Lorenzo dropped to 2-6, 2-3. — Phil Jensen
Encinal 28, Castro Valley 27
Nah’shon Geeston-Vick’s interception with about 20 seconds to go allowed Encinal to escape with a one-point win over Castro Valley in an MVAL/WACC Mission Division contest. The Jets (7-1, 5-0) can wrap up the division title if they win at Washington-Fremont next Friday. Encinal quarterback Garrett Deatherage had another monster night, completing 16 of 26 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns. He added 83 yards and one TD on seven rushes. Encinal was leading 28-19 on a 20-yard run by Deatherage when Castro Valley scored a touchdown and two-point conversion to make it a one-point game. Lucas Chauvin hit Nolan Barnes from 28 yards out for six, then Chauvin found Chase Robinson for the two points, making it 28-27. The Castro Valley defense stopped Encinal on its next possession, then drove inside the Jets’ 20 before Geeston-Vick sealed the win with his interception. Castro Valley (4-4, 3-1) may have to win out to earn an NCS playoff berth in Division II. The Trojans are playing well with four wins in their last five games after an 0-3 start. — Mike Lefkow
Antioch 23, Heritage 18
Antioch’s defense held Heritage to just 170 yards of total offense while improving to 3-0 in Bay Valley Athletic League play. But the Panthers (5-3) will face the toughest stretch of their season during the next two weeks with visits to Liberty and Pittsburg. As well as Antioch played on defense, things got dicey in the fourth quarter. Heritage scored two touchdowns in 62 seconds to cut the Antioch lead to 23-18 with 6:35 to go. Devon Rivers scored on a 35-yard run, then Jacob Wasso found Jeremiah Ruffin for a 21-yard touchdown. But Antioch regrouped and didn’t allow another point while improving to 5-3 overall. Antioch’s offense was led by Jorge Hernandez Jr. with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Isaiah Pino scored the Panthers’ other TD. Octavio Santero kicked a field goal for Antioch. Heritage (4-4, 1-2) got 94 yards rushing and two TDs from Rivers. — Mike Lefkow
Northgate 70, Concord 0
The visiting Broncos scored four touchdowns in both the first and second quarters to remain undefeated in the DAL Valley Division. Anthony Billeci and RJ Anderson both had two touchdowns. Billeci scored on a pair of 2-yard runs and Anderson had a 21-yard TD reception and a pick-six. In a text, Concord coach Paul Reynaud said he was proud of his team’s effort. “We are playing a ton of young players (freshmen and sophomores) and they didn’t give up and kept playing hard,” he said. Northgate improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Valley. Concord fell to 1-7, 1-2. — Phil Jensen
South Bay/Peninsula/SF
Archbishop Riordan 48, Sacred Heart Cathedral 21
Riordan scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to break open a tight game and went on to a victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral at Westmoor High to reclaim The Stanfel Cup, which goes to the winner in this matchup between San Francisco WCAL schools. Emilio Cruz, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior, threw four touchdown passes to lead the Crusaders, who split two games with SHC in the spring. SHC led 14-7 after the first quarter Friday but trailed 21-14 at halftime. Riordan eventually built a 42-14 lead before SHC scored again. Riordan improved to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the WCAL. SHC, which was coming off an upset win over Bellarmine in San Jose, fell to 2-6, 2-3. — Darren Sabedra
Leland 21, Piedmont Hills 7
Leland, coming off a loss to Santa Teresa, got two second-half rushing touchdowns from Mark Eby in a game that was scoreless at halftime. Pierre Goldstein added another rushing score for Leland, which remains in a tie for first place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division with a 4-1 record (6-2 overall). Piedmont Hills fell to 4-4, 2-3. — Phil Jensen
Palo Alto 35, Mountain View 34
Mountain View missed a game-winning field goal in the final seconds when the ball went wide left. The Spartans have lost their last two games by a total of five points. The field goal attempt was from 42 yards, which is no chip shot in high school. Both Palo Alto and Mountain View are fighting for their playoff lives. Palo Alto, 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the SCVAL De Anza Division, has games left against Milpitas next week at home and at Wilcox on Nov. 5. Mountain View (5-4, 2-3) pays a visit to undefeated Los Gatos next Friday. Palo Alto led 35-28 in the fourth quarter when Mountain View mounted a comeback. The Vikings scored their final points on a run from inside the 10 by quarterback Danny Peters, who then found Brody Simison in the back side of the end zone for the two-point conversion. Mountain View then scored to make it 35-34, but the extra point was blocked. The Spartans got the ball back with one last shot to score and drove into the red zone, but couldn’t convert the three-pointer. The Spartans rushed for 286 yards. Min Kant and Leo Navarro led the way with 86 and 85 yards, respectively. Mountain View coach Shelley Smith said his team remains hopeful of making the playoffs, regardless of what happens against Los Gatos. Smith said Los Altos in the SCVAL El Camino Division could determine their fate. If Los Altos wins that division — it has a one-game lead with two league games left — it will help the Spartans in the Central Coast Section points system. Mountain View beat Los Altos early in the season 42-7. — Mike Lefkow
Santa Teresa 14, Silver Creek 9
Santa Teresa did all its scoring in the third quarter and remained tied with Leland for first place in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton standings. Both teams are 4-1 in league play, though Santa Teresa holds the tiebreaker because of a 14-13 victory over Leland on Oct. 15. Silver Creek (3-5, 1-4) led 3-0 at halftime on a 35-yard field goal by Trajan Sinatra, but Kai Matthews put Santa Teresa in front 7-3 on a 50-yard screen pass from Jayden Arevalo. A 5-yard run by Sinatra made it 9-7 Silver Creek, but Santa Teresa took the lead for good when Arevalo scored on an 8-yard run. The Saints (5-3 overall) close out the season with Live Oak and Oak Grove. Assuming they can split the two games, Saints coach Steve Papin said he is hopeful his team will be seeded in Division III or IV for the Central Coast Section playoffs. — Mike Lefkow
Pioneer 31, Branham 14
Pioneer moved a step closer to the BVAL Santa Teresa Division championship, winning at home Thursday behind Axel Garcia and Jeremiah Lolohea. Garcia ran for 115 yards and three touchdowns in 13 carries. Lolohea ran for 90 yards and a TD in 10 carries and led the Pioneer defense with 13 tackles, including 10 solos. The Mustangs led 17-0 at halftime and 24-0 after the third quarter. Pioneer improved to 6-2 overall and 5-0 in the league. The Mustangs close the regular season at Prospect next Friday and at home against Willow Glen on Nov. 5. Branham fell to 5-3, 3-2. — Darren Sabedra
Leigh 49, Willow Glen 0
Sam Betz rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns in eight carries to lead Leigh, playing on its home field Thursday, to a rout of Willow Glen in BVAL Santa Teresa Division play. Sophomore Shayan Shariat added 97 yards in five carries and Issac Amorim ran for a TD for the Longhorns, who ran their record to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the league. Aidan Williams also connected with Aidan Goo for a TD. Leigh scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters and added a touchdown in the fourth. Willow Glen slipped to 1-7, 0-5. The Rams finished with 79 yards rushing and 64 passing. Leigh had 378 yards rushing and 37 passing. — Darren Sabedra
Gunn 41, Cupertino 27
Gunn kept its SCVAL El Camino Division title hopes alive, winning on the road Thursday over a Cupertino team that entered the game undefeated. James Lambert led the run-dominated Titans with 231 yards and three touchdowns in 14 carries. Gunn also got 147 yards and three touchdowns in 11 attempts from Filippi Montes IV and 121 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries from Kevin Green. Jayden Hall had 188 yards and two TDs passing and 57 yards and a TD rushing for Cupertino, which fell to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the El Camino, Gunn improved to 6-2, 3-1. Los Altos, which has beaten Gunn, leads the division with a 4-0 record. Cupertino plays host to Los Altos in a regular-season finale Nov. 5. — Darren Sabedra
Hill 24, Gunderson 8
In a battle for first place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division, Hill (5-3, 5-0) scored all of its points in the first half. Anthony Martinez and Edward Gutierrez connected for two touchdown passes, and Martinez added a rushing TD. Defensively, Gutierrez forced a fumble and Wesley Kieu had a fumble recovery and an interception. Gunderson (4-4, 4-1) scored in the fourth quarter on a 40-yard pass from Josiah Rangel to Gustavo Rojas. — Phil Jensen
Fremont-Sunnyvale 56, Monta Vista 6
The Firebirds (4-4, 2-2 Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division) had two players rush for more than 140 yards in this SCVAL El Camino Division victory. Don Martinez, a sophomore, ran for 156 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns. TJ Takafua, a senior, had 142 yards on the ground on 11 carries and also reached the end zone three times. Bronson Stein had six tackles for Fremont and also caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Nate Studdard. Monta Vista scored early in the first quarter on a 31-yard pass from Greyson Mobley to Ronit Ramchandani. Monta Vista fell to 2-7, 0-5 with the loss. — Phil Jensen
