Veterans Day celebration
After a two-year COVID hiatus, the Cupertino Veterans Memorial Foundation is resuming its Veterans Day celebration Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Park, 21251 Stevens Creek Blvd.
The theme this year is a tribute to Gold Star families. De Anza College President Lloyd Holmes will open the ceremony, followed by remarks by Mike Myatt, a retired major general in the U.S. Marine Corps. Myatt commanded the Marine 1st Infantry Division in Operation Desert Storm, and was President of the Marines Memorial Association in San Francisco for 15 years.
The Cupertino Veterans Memorial was the nation’s first memorial to soldiers in the Afghanistan conflict. The bronze statue at its center depicts Matt Axelson of Cupertino, who was killed in Operation Red Wings. He received the Navy Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for valor.
Thanks to the efforts of Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA), the Cupertino Post Office has been renamed the Matthew G. Axelson Cupertino Post Office. Renaming ceremonies are set to occur after the first of the year.

Natural connection
The Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority is accepting applications for its Urban Grant Program. The grant program aims to fund projects that will improve the quality of life by increasing access to nature for urban residents.
The program is expected to provide a total of $1.5 million, allocated roughly evenly between program and capital project grants. Applications are due Feb. 9, 2023, for the former and Feb. 23, 2023, for the latter.
