CUPERTINO – Four young children were injured – two of them seriously – in a suspected DUI collision over the weekend in Cupertino, authorities said.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz said in a news release.

The driver of a silver Mazda pickup truck collided with another vehicle and hit a power pole, Jarosz said. Four children – ages 11, 8, 7 and 4 – who were on the sidewalk at the time were also struck.

“Several calls to 911 described a horrific scene that could have been prevented,” Jarosz said in the news release.

Two of the children suffered serious injuries, Jarosz said. Emergency medical personnel performed life-saving measures and all four were taken to area hospitals.

One child remained in critical condition Monday.

The driver of the Mazda – identified as a 38-year-old Cupertino man – was arrested and booked into county jail on charges of driving under the influence of drugs causing seriously bodily injury, Jarosz said.

The Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Specialists team is investigating the collision.
