Texas officials say they are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of an elderly high school staff member from a head injury after an “interaction” with a student.

KSAT-TV first reported about the incident at Louis D. Brandeis High School where 73-year-old Alfred Jimenez fell and hit his head on the morning of Feb. 7.

“The injury occurred while the employee was attempting to redirect a student. In the course of the interaction with the student, the employee fell to the floor and sustained a head injury,” said Barry Perez, a spokesperson for the district.

The man was transported by emergency medical services to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

A letter sent to parents said that Jimenez worked as an instructional assistant at the Applied Learning Environment classroom with students who have moderate to severe cognitive disabilities. He had worked with the district for a decade.

“The entire Bronco family is grieving his loss. His impact on the campus was far reaching and impacted students and staff both in and out of the classroom,” read the letter. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Jimenez Family during this challenging time. We remain dedicated to providing support to Mrs. Jimenez and her family.”

Officials said counselors would be available at the school for students and staff. Brandeis High School is located in San Antonio and serves about 2,700 students.

“We ask that you keep those affected in your thoughts and prayers,” the letter concluded.

Jimenez was known as “Mr. Fred” by the students.

In a similar incident from 2022, a student was accused of violently assaulting a teacher after asking about his grades. He allegedly punched her until she was unconscious and then sexually assaulted her. He was arrested a mile away from the school and charged with attempted murder and other charges.
