OAKLAND – The city of Oakland’s homicide count for the year climbed closer to 100 with a fatal shooting Tuesday afternoon near the Sobrante Park neighborhood.

The shooting happened just after 3:30 p.m. in the 300 block of 105th Avenue, the Oakland Police Department said in a statement. Officers arrived to find a person suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The victim received emergency medical aid but was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity once it is confirmed and their next of kin is notified.

The killing is the 98th homicide investigated this year by Oakland police. Last year at this time police had investigated 102 homicides.

An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No arrests were announced Tuesday.
