Joseph Latu scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and Jaden Green’s 4-yard run in the second quarter, set up by Kyon Loud’s 55-yard punt return, made it 14-0. From there, the visitors from San Mateo never looked back as they rolled to a victory in West Catholic Athletic League play over Mitty at Foothill College. Loud’s 5-yard run on an end-around extended the margin to 21-0 late in the first half and the Padres added three more touchdowns in the third quarter to improve to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the league. Mitty fell to 4-2, 1-2. Next Saturday, Serra will play host to Bellarmine and Mitty will visit Archbishop Riordan. — Darren Sabedra
No. 3 San Ramon Valley 35, No. 19 Clayton Valley 7
Marco Jones made big plays on offense (two TD receptions) and defense (strip sack, huge stop on third down) and QB Luke Baker (334 yards passing, four TDs) was impressive yet again as San Ramon Valley (6-0, 1-0) broke open a competitive game in the second half for a running-clock victory in EBAL Mountain Division play. Clayton Valley is 2-4, 0-1. Darren Sabedra has the recap here.
No. 4 Pittsburg 58, Deer Valley 0
The Pirates (6-0, 1-0 Bay Valley Athletic League) beat Deer Valley for the 11th straight time dating back to 2012. Quarterback Marley Alcantara completed 6 of 13 passes for 55 yards, but he threw three for touchdowns, giving him 19 for the season. Pittsburg did most of its damage on the ground, with junior Jamar Searcy, a transfer from Liberty, running for 140 yards on just five carries. He scored two touchdowns. Marc Harrell Jr., Makari Kenion and Bobby Shaw caught touchdown passes. Kenion caught two, giving him eight for the season. Backup QB Andrew Marin threw the touchdown to Harrell. Deer Valley (3-3, 0-1), which broke an 18-game losing streak earlier this season that dated back to 2021, began the toughest stretch of its 2023 schedule Friday night. The Wolverines’ next three opponents are league games against Heritage, Liberty and Antioch before they finish the season Nov. 3 at Freedom. – Mike Lefkow
No. 5 Archbishop Riordan 55, Bellarmine 41
The visiting Crusaders won for the fifth time in six games, rolling to a 42-13 halftime lead. It was 49-20 after three quarters. Bellarmine outscored Riordan 21-6 in the fourth period, but the game was never in doubt. Riordan led 55-27 before Bellarmine struck for two touchdowns in the final four minutes. The only time the game was competitive was in the first quarter when Bells quarterback Parker Threatt ran 16 yards to trim Riordan’s lead to 14-7 with 6:30 to go. Riordan then went on a 28-6 run to close out the half and ensure that Bellarmine would fall to 1-5, 0-3. The Crusaders, who scored first Friday on a 48-yard run on first down, are becoming scarier with every passing week. They are 3-0 in WCAL play and have outscored their league opponents 138-92. That’s an average of 15 points per game. Riordan hosts Mitty next Saturday before it plays back-to-back contests at Serra and St. Francis. The game against St. Francis will be on only six days’ rest. – Mike Lefkow
No. 6 El Cerrito 64, Bethel 0
El Cerrito was unstoppable in a Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division opener against Bethel. Washington State commit Kamani Jackson got things started with a 50-yard punt return, and Ziare Eastman scored rushing touchdowns of 15 and 50 yards. Guardian Harper had an eight-yard run, and Ronald Williams scored on a one-yard TD. Senior running back Micah Avery had one- and 16-yard touchdowns. Quarterback Michael Vanhook threw a 40-yard TD to Jayvon Bolds and a five-yard TD to Terrell Turner. Sione Fanaika had two sacks as coach Jacob Rincon’s defense notched its second shutout of the year. The Gauchos have not lost a game in league play since 2019. El Cerrito (6-0, 1-0) plays host to Pinole Valley on Thursday, and Bethel (1-5, 0-1) will be at home to play Hercules on Friday. – Joseph Dycus
No. 11 Los Gatos 37, No. 23 Sacred Heart Prep 7
The Wildcats (4-2) put it all together against Sacred Heart Prep, scoring at least one touchdown in every quarter of their Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division opener. The Gators (3-3, 1-1) hung tough for a half, trailing only 14-7 at intermission. But Los Gatos outscored the visitors 23-0 in the second half, turning the game into a rout. Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung had a huge night. He scored four touchdowns and rushed for 164 yards. One of his touchdown runs went 73 yards. Quarterback A.J. Minyard connected on eight of nine passes for 109 yards and a TD. Jaylen Thomas caught an 8-yard pass from Minyard for Los Gatos’ first score. Cornerback Scott Garwood and linebacker Henry Masters had 10 tackles apiece. Los Gatos had a challenging non-league schedule that resulted in a one-point win over Liberty, a one-point loss to Grant-Sacramento and a 10-point loss to Pittsburg. But it should have toughened up the Wildcats for league play. The PAL Bay will get five automatic bids to the Central Coast Section playoffs, so SHP should be in the hunt until the end. The Gators handed Burlingame a 41-7 loss last week, and Burlingame turned around Friday and beat Mountain View. – Mike Lefkow
No. 12 Wilcox 41, Menlo-Atherton 3
In the first league matchup between these traditional public school powers, Wilcox dominated on defense and Tyson Bonilla ran the Chargers’ split-back veer offense to perfection, rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for another as the visitors rolled to victory. No. 13 St. Francis 21, No. 9 St. Ignatius 6
St. Francis held St. Ignatius without a touchdown and Aaron Knapp threw two TD passes to Perrion Williams as the host Lancers bounced back from a lopsided defeat at Serra last week. St. Francis improved to 3-3, 2-1. SI is 3-3, 1-2. Glenn Reeves has the details here.
No. 14 Campolindo 49, College Park 21
Joe Revelos caught a 35-yard touchdown pass to start a big night for the Campo offense as the Cougars won at home in Moraga over College Park to improve to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Diablo Athletic League’s Foothill Division. Revelos finished with four receptions for 65 yards. Campo also got a 10-yard TD run from Mack Fisher, a 20-yard TD reception from Crosby Kelly and a 50-yard interception return for a TD from Jake Spencer. Micah Parker added two touchdown runs, from 24 and 20 yards out, and finished with 78 yards in nine carries. Isaiah Ortiz was 10 of 12 passing for 160 yards and two TDs. Campo led 14-0 after the first quarter and 35-0 at halftime. Izaac Jinks and Hunter Pelayo both ran for more than 100 yards for College Park, and Langston Cook had some productive runs and played well on defense. “Our boys played really hard and fought the entire game,” said College Park coach Casey Moreno, in his first season with the team. “New program, we’re getting better.” Next Friday, Campo travels to Northgate and College Park (2-4, 0-3) will play host to Las Lomas. – Darren Sabedra
No. 16 Amador Valley 70, Dougherty Valley 0
Playing with new quarterback Tristan Tia for the first time, the Dons (4-2) opened East Bay Athletic League Valley Division play by easing past Dougherty Valley. Tia, a transfer from Granada who had to sit out the first five games due to transfer eligibility rules, threw five touchdown passes and ran for a sixth. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior completed 17 of 21 passes for 365 yards. Nate Jetter caught 10 passes for 222 yards and a pair of scores. Anthony Harrington had three catches for 75 yards and two TDs. The Dons had been eagerly waiting for Tia to become eligible after scoring only 75 points in their first five games. Of those points, 41 came in a seven-point win over Monte Vista on Sept. 15. Dougherty Valley fell to 2-5, 0-1 on the season. – Mike Lefkow
No. 17 Monte Vista 41, Foothill 14
Monte Vista running back Julian McMahan had 169 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns, and quarterback Brayden Turner threw for 280 yards and two TDs as Monte Vista won in coach Johnny Millard’s return to Pleasanton. Joseph Dycus was at Foothill and has the full report here.
No. 18 Hillsdale 35, Homestead 0
Erick Waugh threw three touchdown passes Thursday as Hillsdale improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Peninsula Athletic League De Anza Division. Waugh completed 8 of 15 passes for 156 yards. Dante Allendorf carried nine times for 138 yards and one touchdown. He was also on the receiving end of two of Waugh’s TD passes. Bennett Young also had a receiving touchdown, an 83-yarder. Hillsdale’s defense held Homestead to 54 yards of total offense. Kingston Hua came up with two interceptions and Waugh had one. Hillsdale plays at Menlo on Friday. No. 20 Menlo 14, Palo Alto 0
The undefeated Knights broke up a scoreless contest with two touchdowns in the final 5:41 of the fourth quarter. Nicky Scacco scored both TDs, the first on a short pass from Mikey McGrath, the second on a 4-yard run. Menlo is 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the PAL De Anza Division. Hillsdale is also 2-0. McGrath completed 12 of 16 passes for 147 yards. Several of those passes went to Brady Jung, who had seven catches for 139 yards. Bradford Tudor had a big night on defense with an interception and a key second-half QB sack with the home team deep in Menlo territory. Palo Alto fell to 2-4, 0-1. “Our offense is MIA,” Palo Alto coach David DeGeronimo texted. – Mike Lefkow
No. 22 Christopher 35, Oak Grove 14
Christopher, playing on the road in San Jose, built a 28-7 halftime advantage on the way to winning its BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division opener. With his team leading 14-7 in the first half, William Rizqallah scored on a 12-yard run to push the advantage to two touchdowns. Jaxen Robinson’s 13-yard run widened the cushion to 21 after two quarters. Robinson’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Amari Bluford in the third quarter completed the scoring for the winning side. Christopher will play host to Santa Teresa on Thursday. Oak Grove (2-4, 0-1) travels to Lincoln-San Jose on Friday. – Darren Sabedra
No. 24 Acalanes 54, Northgate 13
Red-hot Acalanes evened its record at 3-3 behind Cal-bound wide receiver Trevor Rogers, who caught two touchdowns, threw a pass for six points and ran in a 2-point conversion. The Dons have now won three in a row after their 0-3 start, and have outscored the opposition 160-13 in the process. Acalanes improved to 2-0 in the Diablo Athletic League Foothill Division, where there is a four-way tie for first between the Dons, Campolindo, Las Lomas and Miramonte, all members of the same Lamorinda School District. Rogers had TD catches of 19 and 7 yards from Sully Bailey, and he threw a 29-yard touchdown to Henry Souza. He ran in a 2-point conversion after Bailey scored from 5 yards out in the second quarter, stretching the Acalanes lead to 21-3. Bailey had two rushing touchdowns and Paul Kuhner scored two more on a 54-yard run and a 14-yard catch from Jake Boselli. Northgate’s (0-6, 0-3) only points in the first three quarters were a pair of field goals by Lucas LeSieur, one of the best kickers in the Bay Area. The Broncos finally reached the end zone when Blayne Ballard threw a 35-yard pass to Jack Kessler. – Mike Lefkow
No. 25 Las Lomas 48, Concord 12
The Knights improved to 6-0 with their non-league win over Concord. Both teams are in the Diablo Athletic League but play in different divisions, Las Lomas in the Foothill, Concord in the Valley. The Knights, who led 41-6 at the half, ran only 23 plays for the entire game. They managed 338 yards of total offense, with 259 yards coming on the ground. Sava Pouridis made the most of his eight carries, gaining 115 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Quarterback Dylan Thomas threw just five passes, completing four for 79 yards and a pair of scores, one each to Kaden Lagaya and Roman Mercado. For Thomas, the TD passes were his ninth and 10th of the season. Concord lost for the fifth time in seven games. Concord had been shut out in their previous four defeats. – Mike Lefkow
East Bay
Alhambra 71, Berean Christian 14
Beau Blau had himself a game for Alhambra as he passed for six touchdowns and ran for another while leading the Bulldogs to a dominant performance at home in Martinez. Luke Beaty caught three TD passes and Lucas Pieper had one receiving and one rushing touchdown. Sutter Allio, Logan Thompson and Cody Brown each scored one TD, and Sylas Mankin, Sergio Tapia and Michael Klapperich all had an interception. Kicker Mason Stinson was 9 for 9 on PATs as Alhambra improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the DAL Valley Division. Berean Christian dropped to 1-5-1, 0-1. Next Friday, Alhambra plays host to Mt. Diablo. Berean Christian has next week off and then will be at home to face Concord on Oct. 21. – Darren Sabedra
Bishop O’Dowd 17, Tennyson 6
The Dragons combined a strong defense with just enough offense to even their overall record at 3-3 in their MVAL/WACC Foothill Division opener. Devin Wilson’s 3-yard pass to Colton Downing gave Bishop O’Dowd a 7-0 first-quarter lead. Chase Borjon’s field goal made it 10-0 at the half, and Owen Merritt ran for six more in the third quarter. Tennyson finally broke through with a touchdown in the final period. Sophomore Jaden Colbert led O’Dowd with nine tackles while Elliott Lewis and Ryan O’Neil each had eight. BOD continued its season-long pattern of following each loss with a win against Tennyson, which has lost five of six and is scoring only 13.7 points per game. Next up for the Dragons will be a visit to Moreau Catholic next Friday. It’ll be the start of three straight on the road for O’Dowd before it returns home on Nov. 3 to wind up the regular season against San Leandro. – Mike Lefkow
Granada 21, Dublin 14
Granada rebounded from a lopsided loss to California with a thrilling victory over Dublin in an EBAL Valley Division game. Quinn Boyd’s QB sneak for a TD with 32 seconds remaining gave Granada a lead it would not relinquish. Dublin’s Jack Duncan threw two touchdown passes to Garrett Esomonu, erasing a 14-0 deficit to even the score. Boyd threw TDs to his brother, Mikey Boyd, and teammate Peyton Richards to give Granada the initial lead. Granada coach Marc Moses said, “We just fought back on our last drive.” Granada (5-2, 1-0) travels to Dougherty Valley on Friday, and Dublin (4-3, 0-1) plays at Livermore on Oct. 20. – Joseph Dycus
Hayward 65, Mt. Eden 13
Hayward scored seven rushing TDs in its victory over Mt. Eden in MVAL/WACC Mission Division play. Quarterback Kennedy Braziel rushed for three TDs and threw for one, and Maurice Hall had three TDs on three carries. Mateaki Paongo ran the ball three times for 87 yards and one TD. Emmanuel Sega caught three passes for 72 yards and Braziel’s lone TD pass. Defender Ayden Niuatoa recovered two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown. On Friday, Hayward (4-2, 1-0) plays host to Encinal and Mt. Eden (0-6, 0-1) will be at home to face Irvington. – Joseph Dycus
James Logan 28, San Leandro 0
Sammy Flores scored three touchdowns as the Colts continued to recover from an 0-4 start. They have won two in a row, and play MVAL/WACC Foothill opponents Castro Valley and Tennyson in their next two games before finishing the regular season against Bishop O’Dowd and Moreau. San Leandro is 1-5, 0-1. Because of the 0-4 start against tough opposition, it’s likely the Colts will have to capture the Foothill Division crown to have a shot at the North Coast Section playoffs. League and division winners receive automatic bids to the playoffs in the NCS, but Logan is a Division I team and likely would be seeded eighth, which would mean a first-round match against De La Salle, Pittsburg or San Ramon Valley. Miramonte 35, Benicia 7
Miramonte’s road victory over Benicia in DAL Foothill Division play was not as easy as the final score implied. Coach Jack Schram said his team is “limping into its bye week” with injuries, but praised LT Thomas Zwahlen, linebackers Gabe Savala and Andrew Bjornson, and wideout Mitch Riechenbach for stepping up when needed. Myles Bastani threw a TD and kept the offense moving even when starting QB Carson Blair was injured. Gabe Roman had a touchdown catch, as did Brody Bornstein. Joe Shallat had a nifty TD in the fourth quarter, blocking a screen pass, catching the ricochet for the interception and returning it for a TD. And in what is quickly becoming a weekly occurrence, WR Jack Quinnild had a spectacular touchdown catch. Benicia (1-5, 0-3) plays at Acalanes on Friday, and Miramonte (6-0, 3-0) plays host to Acalanes on Oct. 20. — Joseph Dycus
Moreau Catholic 49, Castro Valley 13
Moreau opened MVAL/WACC Foothill Division play in impressive fashion, cruising at home in Hayward behind numerous standouts. Jayden Bryant ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns in eight carries, returned a kickoff 99 yards for a TD and also caught a 25-yard touchdown pass. Peyton Collins carried nine times for 139 yards and a TD, and Jeremiah Charles was 17 of 27 passing for 271 yards and two touchdowns as the Mariners upped their record to 3-3, 1-0. Jalen Arnold also caught a TD pass and was among the standouts on defense. Andrew Placido, Jeremiah Bailey, Lance Mitchell and Miles Moore also played well defensively for Moreau. The Mariners will be back at home Friday to play Bishop O’Dowd. Castro Valley (2-4, 0-1) visits James Logan on Friday. – Darren Sabedra
Mt. Diablo 41, Ygnacio Valley 22
Mt. Diablo’s Herschel Turner had, by his lofty standards, a quiet game. In a DAL Valley Division opener that the Red Devils dominated, Turner had just three carries that he still turned into 124 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 28 rushing TDs through six games. Jakorey Robinson rushed for two first-half touchdowns for Mt. Diablo, which overcame an 8-7 first-quarter deficit against a Ygnacio Valley team that has not won a game since 2019. YV (0-7, 0-1) plays host to Concord on Friday, and Mt. Diablo (5-1, 1-0) travels to Alhambra. — Joseph Dycus
St. Mary’s-Berkeley 42, Kennedy-Richmond 12
Sophomore quarterback Sutton Ralls threw for two touchdowns and Elijah Hines rushed for a pair of six-pointers in this Tri-County Athletic League Stone Division contest. Ralls found TE Elliott Jennings for a 33-yard touchdown on a play-action pass, then completed a 47-yarder to Marley Filson for another score. Kamau Edwards and Marcus Hughes also had running touchdowns for the visitors, who improved to 4-2 overall while winning their TCAL opener. Deondre Prim was the star for Kennedy (4-2, 0-1), returning a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and running the ball seven times for 72 yards and a score. – Mike Lefkow
Salesian 49, Pinole Valley 0
Salesian scored on every first-half possession en route to an easy win in the Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division opener for both schools on Thursday. The Pride (5-1) led 42-0 at halftime against Pinole Valley (2-4), last season’s CIF Division 7-AA state champs. Salesian QB Marco Turqueza ran 60 yards for one touchdown and threw passes for two more scores, both to 6-foot-3 sophomore Carlton Perrilliat, one of the better scorers on the Pride’s high-powered basketball team. Joseph Tarin, Luis DeJesus and Ethan Soungpanya also scored touchdowns. The Pride is battling St. Vincent-Petaluma and Moreau Catholic for the No. 1 seed in Division VI of the North Coast Section playoffs. Moreau handed Salesian its only loss. The Pride doesn’t play St. Vincent. Of the four games left on Salesian’s schedule, only El Cerrito appears capable of beating it. Salesian hosts El Cerrito on Nov. 4. Pinole Valley could have a difficult time making the section playoffs. Calpreps.com has the Spartans ranked eighth in D-VI, which is an eight-team bracket. South Bay/Peninsula
Branham 66, Gilroy 20
Jack Lewis completed 23 of 30 passes for 449 yards and six touchdowns and also ran for 35 yards and a TD as Branham breezed to a victory on the road over Gilroy on Thursday in BVAL Santa Teresa-Foothill Division play. “I thought it was Will Augenstein out there for a second,” Branham coach Stephen Johnson wrote in a text, referring to his team’s star last season. Brayden Hodges caught three of Lewis’ passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, and Preston Conrad had five receptions for 98 yards and two TDs. Elias Antillion and Sebastian Golden each caught one touchdown pass as the Bruins improved to 4-2, 1-0. They play host to Piedmont Hills on Thursday. Gilroy (0-6, 0-1) visits Independence on Friday. – Darren Sabedra
Burlingame 21, Mountain View 14
Angelo Medina rushed for more than 200 yards and scored all three Burlingame touchdowns to lead the Panthers to the PAL Bay Division victory. Medina’s third touchdown broke a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter. Burlingame had 367 yards of total offense, 344 of it rushing. For Mountain View, Arturo Hernandez scored on the ground and Lex Silver caught a pass for a touchdown. Burlingame (3-3, 1-1) hosts Wilcox and Mountain View (3-3, 0-2) plays at Los Gatos on Friday. — Glenn Reeves
Carlmont 56, Santa Clara 28
Carlmont took out its frustrations from a tough-luck 0-5 start as Braedon Kumar, after a 297-yard game the previous week against Los Altos, rushed for 331 yards on 17 carries with three touchdowns. He also kicked a 30-yard field goal. Cameron Booth added 125 yards and two TDs. Juan Olvera forced a fumble and scooped and scored from more than 60 yards out. Matthew Conklin threw three touchdown passes for Santa Clara, to Kyree Brown, Jeremiah Karongo and Mitchell Pacheco. “Carlmont came out ready to play and we had no answer,” Santa Clara coach Nelson Gifford said. Carlmont (1-5, 1-1 PAL El Camino) is at El Camino on Thursday. Santa Clara (2-4, 1-1) hosts Los Altos on Friday. — Glenn Reeves
Capuchino 36, Milpitas 31
The Mustangs kept their hopes for an unbeaten season alive, rallying from two second-quarter deficits to win their sixth in a row. They are 2-0 in the PAL’s Ocean Division, tied for first with Aragon. Three first-period turnovers helped put the visiting Mustangs in 17-0 and 24-7 holes, but Lucas Zayac scored three running touchdowns to lead the comeback. The Mustangs trailed 24-14 at the half, but they took a 27-24 lead going into the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Charlie Barfield, who scored again in the fourth quarter to put Capuchino ahead 33-24. Sebastian Zuniga’s field goal increased the lead to 36-24 before Milpitas (4-2, 1-1 PAL Ocean) managed a late touchdown to make it a one-score game. Milpitas started quickly when Jacob Souza intercepted a pass and returned it 71 yards for a 7-0 lead. A fumble recovery by Alfredo Lugo and a run of about 25 yards by Adrian Chavez helped the Trojans build their advantage to 17-0. “We made a lot of mistakes on our end. It was us doing it to us,” Capuchino coach Jay Oca said of his team’s slow start. – Mike Lefkow
Cupertino 20, Gunn 13
Arvin Hosseini’s two rushing touchdowns propelled Cupertino to its victory over Gunn in a PAL Lake Division game. Dylan Zamoruev was seemingly unblockable, finishing with seven QB hurries, four tackles for loss and a strip sack. Justin Kim returned that forced fumble for a Cupertino TD. Malachi Perez and Kevin Xie combined for five pass breakups. Samuel Dellenbach, a junior WR/SS, scored a TD for Gunn while also snagging an interception. Nolan Tok played well at middle linebacker. Gunn RB Cameron Owen rushed for a TD. On Friday, Cupertino (4-2, 3-0) plays host to Jefferson while Gunn (2-4, 0-3) will be at home to play Lynbrook. – Joseph Dycus
Del Mar 51, Evergreen Valley 0
Del Mar has found its stride in BVAL West Valley play as the Dons won their third in a row with a rout of Evergreen Valley. Jake Schwoob and Davy Hernandez each returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Schwoob also caught a TD as a WR. Quarterback Andre Latimore ran for three touchdowns, and senior RB Bradley Tavish rushed for one TD. Angel Nolasco had a sack and two tackles for loss. Fremont-Sunnyvale 24, Los Altos 20
Trailing by 10 points late in the third quarter, Fremont rallied on Thursday to score two touchdowns as the Firebirds defeated host Los Altos in a PAL El Camino Division game. After a defensive stop with 4:30 left, Fremont drove 80 yards in 11 plays for the decisive TD with 35 seconds to play. On the scoring play, running back Elijah Smith appeared headed for the touchdown but fumbled at the goal line. Offensive guard Davis Scholten fell on the ball in the end zone to give Fremont a victory that improved its record to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league. Los Altos fell to 2-4, 1-1. Noah Beedon led Los Altos with 189 yards passing and three TDs, all to wide receiver Drew Rafferty. The Eagles also got 82 yards in 18 carries from RB Maxime Morelle. Fremont QB Henry Buenrostro ran for 102 yards and a TD in 13 carries and RB Jordan McKinney added 74 yards and a TD in eight attempts. For Fremont on defense, Jonathan Regalado had an interception and Gannon Stein and Anthony Alas each had a sack. Independence pulled out a win in its BVAL Santa Teresa-Foothill Division opener thanks to a strong defensive effort led by CJ Chapanar, who had two sacks. The Sixers got an offensive touchdown on a 64-yard pass from Myles Pagaduan to Jordan Pagaduan. Solomon Bocage returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown and Jacob Madrid kicked a 32-yard field goal. Damian Flores completed 13 of 25 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown, to Kian Upton, for Pioneer. Independence (3-3, 1-0) hosts Gilroy and Pioneer (2-4, 0-1) plays Silver Creek at home on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

The Longhorns’ rushing attack could not be stopped as Leigh routed Mt. Pleasant in a BVAL Santa Teresa-Valley Division game. Shayan Shariat, a 220-pound power back, rushed for three touchdowns in the first half and caught one more as part of a 205-yards-from-scrimmage day. Zach Pistor rushed for 172 yards and two TDs on 21 carries, with both of his touchdowns coming in the second half. Quarterback T.J Donaldson threw for 147 yards and a TD. Cam Tchir was 6 for 6 on PATs and also had a 35-yard reception. On Friday, Leigh (4-2, 1-0) plays host to Willow Glen and Mt. Pleasant (3-3, 0-1) welcomes Sobrato. — Joseph Dycus
San Mateo 34, Terra Nova 14
Emmanuel Fitzgerald carried 23 times for 222 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Bearcats. QB Cameron Palma only threw three passes, but completed all of them, for 97 yards and one for a touchdown. Palma also rushed for a touchdown and picked off a pass. Christian Bagileo also had an interception. San Mateo (3-3, 1-1 PAL Ocean) plays at Capuchino and Terra Nova (3-3, 0-2) is at Sequoia on Friday. — Glenn Reeves
The King’s Academy 43, Half Moon Bay 6
Jeaden Underwood rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns in only eight carries. Reid Black completed 11 of 12 passes for 148 yards and three touchdowns. He also picked up 22 yards on two carries. Kyle Welch had three receptions for 88 yards and three TDs. Defensively, Matt Kennedy made 19 tackles and had a fumble recovery, Lukas Morris had 12 tackles and a forced fumble and Josh Taylor was in on seven tackles with a sack and four quarterback hurries. TKA (3-2, 1-0 PAL De Anza) plays at Homestead and HMB (1-5, 0-2) is at Palo Alto on Friday. — Glenn Reeves
Woodside 35, El Camino 2
Carmelo Mendes, subbing for Evan Usher, who was out with a thigh injury, rushed for 116 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead Woodside. Oliver Lyssand added two rushing touchdowns and Mason Furtado one on his only carry. Woodside had a team total of 317 yards on the ground. Furtado also stood out at linebacker with eight tackles, one sack and six tackles for loss. Daniel Torres had an interception. Woodside (4-2, 1-1 PAL El Camino) hosts Fremont-Sunnyvale and El Camino (0-6, 0-2) plays at home against Carlmont on Thursday. — Glenn Reeves
