Two decomposed bodies were recovered from a riverbed Sunday near Fremont, authorities said Monday.

The bodies — believed to be those of a man and a woman — were so badly degraded authorities did not yet know their causes of death or their identities, said Lt. Tya Modeste, public information officer for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Fremont police responded about 3:15 p.m. Sunday to a report of two bodies in or near a riverbed in the area of the 1300 block of Old Canyon Road, which runs alongside Alameda Creek across from Niles Canyon Road, Modeste said.

Police determined the bodies were in the county’s jurisdiction, and sheriff’s deputies and coroner’s officials responded, Modeste said. The bodies were retrieved, but no identification was found.

Autopsies were pending, Modeste said, and investigators were waiting to learn more about the possible circumstances of the deaths.

An investigation was ongoing.
