OAKLAND — A Bay Area man has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison for killing a man during a confrontation at a local gas station, court records show.
Brian LeGrand Jr., 37, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the March 25, 2021 shooting death of 29-year-old Derrick Glenn. LeGrand was identified as a suspect after an anonymous tipster told police LeGrand blamed Glenn for the drug overdose death of a relative.
Video surveillance of the shooting showed a man with a tattoo on his neck pulling a gun and shooting Glenn after the two spoke for about 15 minutes. Police say they matched the neck tattoo from the video to LeGrand.
At LeGrand’s August preliminary hearing, the defense argued video showed Glenn had a gun next to him as he sat in his car, and that he must have made a move for the weapon just before LeGrand produced his own pistol and fired.
LeGrand entered his no contest plea in July, and was sentenced Aug. 16. He was transferred to North Kern State Prison, a classification facility, on Sept. 1, records show.
