Republicans have been highlighting the two-year anniversary of the Biden administration’s botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is currently running for president, was among the GOP figures to draw attention to the anniversary and decry the dearth of accountability.
“This month marks the second anniversary of Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. Americans and our Afghan allies were left behind. Thirteen brave servicemembers were killed. Intelligence warnings that the Taliban would quickly take over were ignored. Billions of dollars in U.S. military equipment were gifted to the Taliban,” he declared in a post on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.
“Since one of the worst foreign policy failures in U.S. history, our enemies including China, Russia, and Iran have become more emboldened. Afghanistan has once again become a terror safe haven as the Taliban eliminates rights for women under its tyranny. It is a disgrace no one has been held accountable,” DeSantis added.
Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who is also runnning in the GOP presidential primary, similarly noted the lack of accountability.
“To date, no one has taken responsibility for the botched withdrawal. No one has been fired, and no one replaced. The families of the 13 murdered service members can’t even get basic answers about what happened. Shame on Joe Biden,” she declared in a post.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and other lawmakers also commented on the matter.
“Today, we mark the second anniversary of the fall of Kabul,” McCarthy noted. “By ceding Kabul to the Taliban, President Biden set off a chain of events that culminated in the death of 13 brave American service members and the humiliation of America on the world stage,” he asserted.
GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas said that Biden is not solely to blame.
“Biden does not bear solitary blame for the Afghanistan disaster. He shares that culpability with the swamp politicians who, for almost two decades, provided no clear mission or strategic objectives for victory,” Roy said in a statement. “Today, we continue to have decades-old, outdated Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) on the books that provide no strategic clarity for the threats we face.”
