HAYWARD — A man killed Aug. 6 when his car crashed on Interstate 880 after he tried to avoid a disabled vehicle has been identified as 57-year-old Charles “Bebe” Nunez of Newark, described by family members as a “very loving and charismatic” father and grandfather.
In a narrative accompanying an online fundraising account established by his family to help with funeral and other expenses, Nunez was described as “very outgoing and always willing to help those in need,” who loved spending time with his family.
The narrative said he is survived by nine children and 10 grandchildren. A son died in 2018.
The narrative says: “We are gong to miss his crazy stories that would make you smile, laugh or cry. No matter where he was his smile always lit up the room. Charles had friends everywhere, he was a very well-respected man.”

Nunez was killed about 9:21 p.m. Aug. 6 after crashing in the northbound lanes of I-880, south of Whipple Road. The California Highway Patrol said said he was driving a 2009 Dodge Charger behind a Honda CR-V that sustained a flat tire.
When Nunez accelerated to pass the vehicle, he lost control, hit a wall and then a center divider, causing him fatal injuries, the CHP said. The CHP initially provided an incorrect age for him.
