FREMONT — An unidentified driver was taken into custody late Friday in connection with a hit-and-run collision that yielded the city’s fourth traffic fatality of the year.

In a statement Sunday evening, police said dispatchers received calls shortly before 8:20 p.m. about a collision between a motorcycle and a vehicle seen leaving Blacow Road and Hilo Street.

Officers arrived within minutes to find a motorcyclist and passenger down in the roadway, and provided care along with Fremont Fire Department firefighters. Despite their efforts, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger’s identity was not available Sunday night, an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau deputy said.

The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

After learning the vehicle had been traveling southbound along Blacow shortly before the collision, officers spoke with witnesses, who described the vehicle and its direction of travel.

Soon after, other officers found and stopped a vehicle about a half-mile away near Grimmer Boulevard and Blacow Road, taking its driver into custody. Police did not share any information about the driver, including specific charges or custody status Sunday night.

Investigators were still working to learn the collision’s cause, and anyone with information may call Fremont police’s traffic unit at 510-790-6760, text “Tip FremontPD” followed by a short message to 888-777 or by visiting https://www.fremontpolice.gov/i-want-to/submit-a-non-urgent-tip.
