The driver of a black Honda CRV was killed Saturday morning after his car overturned, triggering a multi-car pileup on eastbound Interstate 80 in San Pablo.

Initial reports that came into the California Highway Patrol before 6 a.m. indicated one vehicle was overturned on eastbound I-80, at the San Pablo Dam Road exit, according to CHP Officer Adib Zeid. He said the driver got out of his car but was struck and killed by another vehicle. Several other cars then crashed into the overturned car before CHP arrived at the scene, but there were no other reported injuries.

The mangled CRV ended up upside down, resting on its roof in the middle of I-80.

The crash and the cleanup and investigation caused a full closure of eastbound I-80 for nearly four hours. Drivers were re-routed until all lanes were reopened at 9 a.m.
