FREMONT — A motorcyclist died Sunday after an apparent vehicle collision that blocked Interstate 880 lanes, authorities said.

Shortly before 6:20 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to northbound I-880 lanes south of Automall Parkway for a report of a possible vehicle collision, CHP Officer James Evans said.

When CHP officers arrived, they found a motorcycle rider lying in the roadway’s left lane suffering from major injuries.

Fremont Fire Department firefighters also responded to the scene, providing emergency life-saving measures, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Their identity was unavailable, pending next-of-kin notification by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau.

There were no other reported injuries, Evans said.

CHP officers issued a Sig-alert at 8:39 p.m. closing the roadway’s two left-most lanes with no estimated time of reopening and advising drivers and residents to avoid the area. All lanes reopened shortly before 9 p.m.

The CHP will investigate the collision, and anyone with information for investigators may call the CHP’s Hayward office at 510-489-1500.
