FREMONT — A man died after an altercation Thursday outside a gas station and police arrested a suspect in the killing, the city’s first homicide of the year, authorities said.

In a statement, police said a passer-by called police around 4:10 p.m. to report the altercation between two men outside the gas station in the 39700 block of Paseo Padre Parkway at Stevenson Road.

When police responded and arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from severe injuries on the ground. Fremont Fire Department firefighters also responded and provided life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Soon after, police said a suspect in the altercation was detained and arrested.

Investigators’ efforts closed southbound lanes of Paseo Padre Parkway from Stevenson Boulevard to Sailway Drive for several hours, and police said there were no outstanding suspects or public safety concerns.
