LIVERMORE – An investigation is underway into the death of a Fremont police detective last month in Livermore, authorities said.

In a statement Friday, the Fremont Police Department said the Livermore Police Department notified it of Matthew Kerner’s death on Jan. 30. Around 2 a.m. that day, Livermore police went to Kerner’s home and found him unresponsive. He received life-saving measures at the scene and was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later.

The case was classified as a death investigation and turned over to the Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau. Kerner’s exact cause of death has yet to be determined, but an initial investigation found no signs of trauma or injury, Fremont police said.

Fremont police Chief Sean Washington reported the death to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. The police department has also hired a third-party investigative service to conduct an internal probe into what led up to Kerner’s death.

“We send our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family,” Washington said in the statement. “Our department is devastated by the tragic loss of Detective Kerner. We are heartbroken and experiencing a great deal of sadness as a result of losing our colleague.”

Kerner’s family is organizing private services, police said.
