HALF MOON BAY – An unlicensed driver hit and killed a bicyclist Thursday afternoon in Half Moon Bay, authorities said.
Deputies were called to the 500 block of Kelly Avenue around 3 p.m. for a report of a collision involving a bicycle and a gold-colored 2001 GMC Yukon, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. They arrived to find a 75-year-old Half Moon Bay man unconscious and suffering from life-threatening injuries.
The man was taken to an area hospital, where he later died of his injuries, the sheriff’s office said. The San Mateo County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
The driver, identified as 18-year-old Half Moon Bay resident Miguel Jose JuarezPerez, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The sheriff’s office said JuarezPerez was later booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving without a license.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the case can contact Detective Richard Deschler at 650-363-4881 or rdeschler@smcgov.org.
