ANTIOCH — A man died after a shooting late Tuesday morning in the city’s Sycamore corridor, becoming the city’s first homicide of the year, authorities said.
In limited initial details, a police spokesperson said officers responded to Sycamore Drive near Peppertree Way just after 10:45 a.m. for a report of a possible shooting. Police later said the location was a liquor store in the 1100 block of Sycamore.
A victim found suffering from at least one gunshot wound in a parking lot outside the store was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later said he was a 25-year-old Pittsburg man, but his identity was not available pending next-of-kin notification from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division.
According to a statement Tuesday evening, police investigators learned a dispute between the man and a suspect ended when the suspect shot the man before fleeing.
Police did not share any suspect or vehicle descriptions Tuesday afternoon, but said they believe the shooting was targeted and that members of the public were not directly at risk.
The shooting is the city’s first homicide of the year. According to reporting by this news organization, Antioch police investigated eight homicides in 2022.
