Now that Christmas and New Years are over, what else can we possibly do to enjoy the rest of these cold, bitter winter months? It’s time to hit the mountains.

I’m not a ski or snowboarding pro, but I used to take ski trips to Pennsylvania with my family back in the day, and shredded those mountains like a little wannabe ski racer. I was even part of a ski club in middle school, and have fond memories of busting my ass on the slopes all night. Sometimes, if I was feeling brave, I’d even pizza-and-french-fry my way down a black diamond. After a long day, I’d head back to the lodge with my friends and we’d heal our bruises with bottomless cups of hot chocolate. It was a grand time.

The earliest skis were forged in prehistoric times for crossing snowy terrain, but it was in the mid-1800s when people began skiing recreationally. Snowboards were actually designed by a dude who loved surfing and wanted to bring the activity into the winter, creating a board called a “Snurfer,” which was revamped into a modern-day snowboard over time. For whatever reason, sliding down a steep slope at 40 miles an hour, moments away from a near-death experience with one wrong move provides an adrenaline rush that can’t quite be replicated.

Many people are scared to learn to ski or snowboard if they’ve never done it before, but even Lindsay Vonn and Shaun White were once beginners. It’s never too late to try something new, and you never know when you’ll find your new passion or escape from the world. Skiing and snowboarding are a classic winter activity and I implore everyone to take a stab at one, even if it ends up in a face plant or two. Luckily, these tattoos won’t hurt as much as the icy snow piercing your face—or maybe they will?
