SANTA CLARA — The first phase of a massive redevelopment that would create a new village in Santa Clara could sprout across the street from Levi’s Stadium following a key city government approval.

City officials have approved a tentative subdivision map — an unwieldy-sounding, routine, yet essential part the huge mixed-use development — that clears the way for the first phase of the project to proceed.

The overall development would create a vast project of residences, office buildings, hotel facilities, shops and restaurants on 209 acres at and near 5155 Stars and Strips Drive in Santa Clara. Related Cos., a development firm, is building the project.

The first phase would be built on what’s called Parcel 5 across the street from Levi’s Stadium along Tasman Drive near Lafayette street.

A residential complex of 200 homes, an office building totaling 440,000 square feet, restaurant and beverage spaces totaling 29,000 square feet and retail spaces totaling 21,400 square feet could be built on the Parcel 5 site.

The city’s approval of the tentative subdivision map is a “somewhat routine process” but “it does represent another important step forward for the project,” said Stephen Eimer, an executive with Related Santa Clara.
