WALNUT CREEK — The discovery of a suspicious package early Monday closed the BART station for about two hours during the morning commute, officials said.

BART police closed the station about 8:10 a.m. to investigate the package. An employee found it in the old parking structure, officials said..

The station opened again about 10:20 a.m. A Walnut Creek bomb squad inspected the device and removed it, BART spokeswoman Anna Duckworth said in message after the tracks re-opened.

BART bomb squad members could be seen with a container with something inside it. The device and the package were found in the north part of the old parking lot.

Construction in the area stopped during the investigation.

Trains did not let out passengers but did travel through the station in both directions. Passengers were not allowed to enter the station or the parking structure. They had to catch trains at the Pleasant Hill or Lafayette stations, the two nearest to Walnut Creek.

The Contra Costa Transit Authority used busses 9 and 14 to provide transportation between the Lafayette and Pleasant Hill stations during the delay.

Duckworth re-iterated an earlier message that police closed the station “out of an abundance of caution.”
