OAKLAND — A 22-year-old Fairfield woman was fatally stabbed Wednesday evening in a car in East Oakland and a man police were told was her boyfriend was later arrested, authorities said.

Police have not yet released the name of the woman or of the suspect, who is 21 and has a San Francisco address, authorities said.

The stabbing happened just after 5:30 p.m. inside a car on D Street near 98th Avenue.

Police said the woman, who was driving with the suspect as the front seat passenger, had just parked the car before the two got into a heated argument.

Police have not said what the argument was about, but the woman was stabbed multiple times, even as she tried to fight off the suspect.

The woman was able to open the driver’s door to try and escape, but collapsed before she could get all the way out of the vehicle, authorities said.

She was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:18 p.m.

The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Police said thanks to a person who followed the suspect, police were able to arrest him a short time later in the 1200 block of 90th Avenue. Parts of his clothing had blood splatters, authorities said. A knife was recovered in the area and police are trying to determine if it was the one used in the killing.

Police were told the two had been in a dating relationship for less than a year. It was not clear why they were in East Oakland.

The man was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.

The killing is the 86th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. The California Highway Patrol has also investigated four killings on Oakland freeways. Last year at this time police had investigated 88 homicides in the city.
