Recovery efforts Thursday for the body of a 20-year-old Oakland man who authorities said drowned at Sandy Beach in Rio Vista Wednesday proved unsuccessful.

The search was paused and is expected to be picked up again Friday by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies, the Coast Guard, Rio Vista police and fire crews and the Montezuma Fire Protection District responded to the area just before 4 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a possible drowning.

The victim had been spending the day with family at the packed beach and had jumped in near the boat launch to go swimming, Solano Sheriff’s Sgt. Rex Hawkins said. At some point his companions noticed he was struggling, the sergeant said, and then he disappeared.

The Sheriff’s Marine Patrol searched until sunset. Efforts resumed Thursday.
