The San Jose Police Bomb Squad responded Tuesday morning to a report of a suspicious device found at the home of Councilwoman Dev Davis in the city’s Willow Glen neighborhood, according to authorities.

Upon further investigation, San Jose bomb technicians confirmed it was an “explosive device,” Sgt. Christian Camarillo of the San Jose Police Department said Tuesday afternoon.

Davis, who recently lost a bid for San Jose mayor in the June 7 primary election, said she was at home with her family when a neighbor found the device near her house. Her family and adjacent neighbors were quickly evacuated.

Davis did not see the device but said in a statement that she was “seriously disturbed” by the possibility that someone might target her and her family because of her role as an elected official.

“This further erodes our democracy and our ability to attract good people to run for public office,” she said in a statement.

Davis was first elected to the San Jose City Council in 2016 and won her re-election race in 2020.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the scene was cleared and Camarillo said that there was no threat to the public.

San Jose police are continuing to investigate the incident. No arrests have been made and police have not received any other recent reports of suspicious devices in the city, Camarillo added.

“We are extremely grateful to SJPD for their diligence,” Davis said. “We are also very grateful to our neighbors for their understanding and support.”
