Rollback of abortion
rights hits vulnerable

Re. “Bracing for Roe v. Wade overturn, state moves to expand abortion services,” Page A1, May 4:

As physicians providing abortion care, we’ve received hundreds of texts, emails, calls: “Are you OK?”

Abortion remains legal and will remain so in California regardless of the final U.S. Supreme Court decision. California continues to pass legislation to both protect and expand abortion access. But this legislation will only help those who are physically able to make it to California.

When the Court decision is finalized, we anticipate that abortion will be illegal in half of the states. We know that MOST people in this country will not have the means to travel, often many hundreds of miles, to receive care. We anticipate the most impacted will be those communities and individuals already marginalized.

So yes, we are “OK” here in California. But this false narrative that California will save the rest of the country is an illusion that will not result in caring for the people with the most need.
