OAKLAND —  Two Oakland Unified School District employees had serious injuries after being hit by a driver Wednesday morning, according to police and school officials.

Two longtime employees with the district were hit by the vehicle around 6:30 a.m. as they were walking from one district facility to another on the 900 block of High Street, according to district spokesperson John Sasaki. They were walking in a crosswalk at the time of the crash, he said. Sasaki declined to release the names of the employees.

The Oakland Police Department confirmed that it was investigating the collision. The Oakland Fire Department also responded to the scene and gave medical aid to both people, who were taken to local hospitals. The driver of the car stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Both employees sustained serious injuries, including broken bones, said Sasaki. They were expected to recover, he added.

“The incident has been devastating to their teams and the entire district,” Sasaki said. “We are hopeful that they recover quickly and can come back to their teams supporting the students and schools of OUSD.”

Surveillance video of the crash has circulated online, but Sasaki said the person who released the footage wasn’t authorized to do so.
