SAN JOSE — Authorities have identified the motorized scooter rider killed last week in a hit-and-run crash involving two separate cars, according to police.
The collision was reported at about 1:53 a.m. Saturday in the area of Lucretia Avenue and Taji Drive, according to a San Jose Police Department news release.
A driver operating a grey 2017 Honda sedan was traveling north on Lucretia Avenue in the left lane and crashed into a rider of a motorized scooter, also driving north on Lucretia Avenue in the same lane, just north of Taji Drive, police said. The man on the motorized scooter was identified as 71-year-old San Jose resident Wayne Bernard Mays.
After the crash, the driver of the Honda fled the scene and another driver of a white mid-sized sports car, also driving on Lucretia Avenue, hit Mays, according to authorities. The driver of the SUV also fled the scene.
Mays was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died, police said.
The incident is being investigated as a felony hit-and-run, according to authorities.
The death marked the 23rd fatal collision of the year, prompting officials to call for additional traffic enforcement officers and to support legislation to introduce speed-tracking cameras.
