HAYWARD — Alameda County coroner’s officials identified two victims Thursday in three separate traffic collisions under active investigation since the year’s beginning, and police are urging caution and care for drivers and pedestrians.
Just before 6:30 a.m. Jan. 1, police responded to a reported collision near Jackson Street and Tarman Avenue and arrived to find a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
The pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was identified as Lydia Aronce, 66, of Hayward. The driver, who police did not identify, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Hours later, around 11:20 p.m. Jan. 1, police responded to another collision report and found two vehicles near Carlos Bee and Mission boulevards.
Both vehicles’ drivers, 28- and 26-year-old men, were taken to hospitals for treatment of major injuries.
Shortly before 6:15 a.m. January 6, police responded to Hesperian Boulevard and Panama Street for a reported collision and arrived to find a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
The pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was identified Thursday as Diego Tzoy-Lux, 21, of San Mateo. The driver in that incident stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
In a statement last week, Hayward police Chief Toney Chaplin somberly addressed the traffic collisions.
“These tragic accidents are a reminder to obey all traffic laws and understand that safety is a shared responsibility. As a driver, be on the lookout for pedestrians at all times,” Chaplin said in part.
“As a pedestrian, be visible at all times and consider wearing reflective clothing while walking at night and during [inclement] weather. Keeping our roadways safe is a top priority at the Hayward Police Department and we ask the community do their part by driving carefully, especially during this rainy season.”
