Those wanting to dive into 2022 by dipping into the frigid Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta River waters at Bethel Island will not find the traditional Frozen Bun Run, which has been canceled, but officials are hoping to bring it back in 2023.

Dannille Peeler of the Rusty Porthole, where the annual water skiing event has been held annually for decades, announced the cancellation on the Bethel Island restaurant/bar’s Facebook page on Friday.

“With the restrictions of who can come in or the mask mandate being back, there is no way we could try to control an event that size,” Peeler wrote. “I know everyone has an opinion on the matter and we have one as well but please stay with us on this and know that we are planning a rocking back on track for the year of 2022.”

“It’s been hard for everyone,” she added.

Past years have seen hundreds of skiers and swimmers from throughout the Bay Area, along with viewers, come out to the shoreline to enjoy the 40-year-old New Year’s Day tradition.
