SAN PABLO — A 29-year-old man suspected of armed robbery was pronounced dead at a hospital after an off-duty police officer fatally shot him at a restaurant where he was eating Sunday, authorities said.

According to a statement by a Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office spokesman, deputies with the sheriff’s Bay Station responded to reports of a shooting shortly after 11:30 a.m. at Nation’s Giant Hamburgers, 16396 San Pablo Ave. in the city’s unincorporated Tara Hills neighborhood.

When deputies arrived, they learned that a man walked into the restaurant before robbing a cashier at gunpoint.

Moments later, an off-duty University of California Police Department sergeant eating at the restaurant confronted the man and fired a shot that hit him.

Sheriff’s deputies provided first aid before paramedics and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters responded, taking the man to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A sheriff’s spokesman identified the man Sunday night as Richmond resident Amanuel Moreno.

There were no other suspects, and there were no other injuries.
