Today Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny ended the court-ordered conservatorship that had granted Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, control over her estate and decisions made both in her professional and personal life. Britney Spears was not present, but her parents were there virtually for the proceedings. Jamie Spears had held this power of conservatorship since 2008. Britney shared a video of her fans who were celebrating the long-fought-for win for the singer. She captioned her Instagram post, with praise for her fans “Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy???? I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day!!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen?”

The fans rejoiced with her, changing their war-cry hashtag from #freebritney to #freedbritney. At the press conference held by Britney Spears’ attorney that followed the ruling, Mathew Rosengart spoke, over the cheers outside the courthouse, declaring, “As of today, effective immediately, the conservatorship has been terminated as to both the person and the estate. This is a monumental day for Britney Spears.” Asked what was next for Britney, he responded, “What’s next for Britney, and this is the first time this could be said for about a decade, is up to one person, Britney.”

Rosengart thanked the #FreeBritney movement this summer. “It’s been a lot of hard work, it’s been intense. I’m proud, Britney’s proud. I think the support of the #FreeBritney movement has been instrumental. To the extent that it allowed my firm to carry the ball across the finish line, I thank them as well.”

Documentaries were made, laying out the steps that were taken and the impact on Britney Spears during the lengthy legal battle. &Britney vs. Spears documentary filmmaker Erin Lee Carr described her film this way. “It was in empathy for people with mental struggles, but it also was that I wanted to move the story forward. I think when I approached Netflix with this story, it wasn’t about the parade of images and videos we have previously seen, but what is going on inside the conservatorship and me, two and a half years ago, maybe I can help crack one of the most mysterious legal mysteries of our time. It was incredibly naive, but if I was going do it, I was going to do it in a forward-facing way. “

Part of Britney’s battle for control over her assets and decision making was remedied in late September, the judge having removed Jamie Spears as the conservator of the singer. There was a temporary conservator, a certified public accountant named John Zabel installed until today’s court date. Zabel will stay on briefly to transfer her assets into her trust.

While Britney Spears has many things to celebrate this evening, her father, Jamies Spears, still has a long road ahead of him in the courtroom. Alleged abuse of spending and alleged surveillance of Britney’s households via video and installed bodyguards are just a couple of the topics Rosengart included in the 110-page petition requesting to depose Spears. He has also hired forensic accountants to take an extensive look into how funds were spent while Jamie Spears held control. The judge has set the next court proceedings for December 13 to address these allegations.
