MILPITAS – A stolen-vehicle suspect was injured in a shootout with detectives Friday afternoon in Milpitas, police said.

The encounter unfolded at 3:41 p.m. at the Milpitas Square Shopping Center on the 400 block of Barber Lane, said Milpitas police Sgt. Jason Speckenheuer in a news release.

Speckenheur said detectives were conducting a law enforcement stop on a stolen vehicle when a man began shooting at them, “resulting in a prolonged exchange of gunfire.”

The shooter was injured and barricaded himself inside the vehicle, Speckenheuer said. He was later extricated from the vehicle, given first aid and taken to a hospital for treatment. There were no details on the man’s injuries or updates on his condition Saturday morning.

No other injuries were reported.

“The suspect’s firearm has been recovered and there is no continuing threat to public safety,” Speckenheuer said. There was no word on charges filed or pending against the suspect.

An investigation is underway into the shooting and authorities are seeking additional witnesses. Anyone with information can contact the Milpitas Police Department at 408-586-2400. Information can also be provided anonymously at 408-586-2500 or www.ci.milpitas.ca.gov/crimetip.
