OAKLAND — A woman died Tuesday morning in an East Oakland house fire, authorities said.
Authorities were trying to identify her.
The fire was reported about 5:18 a.m. Tuesday at the two-story home in the 3400 block of Pierson Street not far from Mills College.
Battalion Fire Chief Chris Landry said when firefighter first got on scene flames and smoke were coming out of the second floor.
Firefighters who entered the home to battle the blaze found the woman in the kitchen area. She was brought outside and pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire spread to the attic area and also ignited some trees outside before it was contained about an hour later, officials said.
More than 20 firefighters responded to the scene. None of the them were injured.
The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation. The majority of the damage was to the second floor and attic area but a damage figure was not immediately available. Landry did say the house was uninhabitable.
