SHREVEPORT, La. — Police in northwest Louisiana believe two children were thrown from a bridge Friday into Cross Lake. One child was pulled from the lake alive, but with life-threatening injures. The other child did not survive.
A woman connected to the case was taken into custody after state troopers stopped a minivan with Texas license plates near the Texas state line, Shreveport Police Sgt. Angie Wilhite said, U.S. News reported.
According to the sergeant, police first received a call about a child in the water shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.
Wilhite did not identify the suspect except to say she was a woman in her 30s. Moreover, authorities did not release the names, ages, or genders of the children.
The horrific crime brought numerous law enforcement agencies to the area in order to assist with the retrieval of the children and pursue an investigation.
Investigating officers apparently concluded the children were tossed from a bridge into the body of water, but were not sure from which bridge, according to U.S. News.
“We do believe at this point that the children were thrown from a bridge,” Wilhite said. “We do not know which one.” She also said the crime did not appear to be a random act of violence.
Police did not immediately release further details.
