Ryan Grantham, a Canadian actor best known for his roles in “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Riverdale,” pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of his mother in March, but according to CBC, the young actor also had plans to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
During his sentencing hearing last week in the British Columbia Supreme Court, the court heard how Grantham rehearsed killing his mother, Barbara Waite, and took videos, which were shown in court, including footage taken after the murder when he confessed to killing his mother and showed her dead body. Grantham shot Waite in the back of the head as she played piano in their home on March 31, 2020.
The court also heard how Grantham allegedly loaded his car the next day with “three guns, ammunition, 12 Molotov cocktails, camping supplies and a map with directions to Rideau Cottage in Ottawa,” where he intended to kill Trudeau. After driving part of the way, Grantham turned around “with thoughts he would instead commit an act of mass violence at SFU or other locations,” but ultimately chose to turn himself in to Vancouver police and confessed to murdering his mother.
According to psychiatric reports, Grantham was going through an intense period of clinical depression and was experiencing urges to commit violence and suicide. He also reportedly felt “self-hatred and guilt” over not attending classes at Simon Fraser University and didn’t want his mother to find out. The reports also alleged that Grantham decided to kill his mother “to spare her from seeing the violence he intended to commit.”
