OAKLAND — A 63-year-old woman who apparently was already lying in an East Oakland roadway died Saturday night after she was struck by several vehicles that kept going, police said Sunday.

The woman’s name has not yet been released. Police said she was an Oakland resident.

Police said the death happened about 10:33 p.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of the 6200 block of Bancroft Avenue.

Police said witnesses told officers that the woman had laid down in the roadway before she was hit by several vehicles, unknown makes and models, that failed to stop.

The woman suffered major head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Why the woman laid down in the roadway is under investigation. Police are also trying to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the identities of any of the  drivers that fled.  Anyone with information is asked to call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
