HAYWARD — A body found at a construction site earlier this year was identified last month as a 22-year-old homeless man, whose death police are now investigating as a homicide, authorities said.

In a statement Wednesday, police said officers responded to the site near the 24000 block of Mission Boulevard after the discovery of remains by a trenching area near construction for a local business.

Police said they did not share word of the body, citing its advanced state of decomposition and an interest in finding whether they were human and if it had historical status.

In late April, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau identified the remains as the body of Tyree Hayden, a 22-year-old homeless man. Hayward police detectives were able to meet with Hayden’s family May 4.

Hayden’s death is under active investigation as the city’s second homicide of three this year, before an April 8 fatal shooting at Jackson Street and Soto Road but after a Feb. 22 fatal shooting in the 22000 block of South Garden Avenue.

BART police also investigated a homicide in its jurisdiction within city limits.
