HAYWARD — Murder charges have been filed against a man who allegedly called 911 to report he shot someone, following the May 14 homicide, court record show.
Omar Garrett, 23, of Oakland, was charged with murdering Joseph Cornelison and remains in Santa Rita Jail on a no-bail hold. Cornelison was shot and killed in the night of May 14, on the 400 block of West A Street in Hayward, police say.
Authorities haven’t released a suspected motive for the crime but say Garrett called 911 immediately after, and was arrested at the scene. A witness said the two were involved in a physical altercation but that Cornelison was unarmed, police wrote in court records.
Garrett had his first court appearance Tuesday but didn’t enter a plea. Once he does, a preliminary hearing date will be set, where a judge will review evidence and determine if there is enough to order Garrett to go to trial.
Cornelison was shot multiple times, police said.
