For the most part, we wear underwear each and every day. Or at the very least, it’s recommended. However, we often save lingerie for special occasions. Lingerie comes from the French language and derives from the word linge, which means linen or clothes. And yet, it wasn’t used to describe bras or underwear until 1922 by a brand named J. Seurre. The concept of lingerie was radical in itself, as a woman’s undergarments had previously only served three purposes—altering the shape of the body, hygiene and modesty. As time went on, lingerie became smaller and more glamorous—largely in part to manufacturers such as Frederick’s of Hollywood.

Frederick’s of Hollywood was founded in 1947 by Frederick Mellinger, who’d also invented the push-up bra. Many notable sex symbols wore Frederick’s of Hollywood, including Bettie Page and later, Madonna. Lingerie continued to expand throughout the 20th century, with brands like Victoria’s Secret bringing it to the masses via shopping malls and televised fashion shows.

Today, lingerie is bigger and better than ever. It focuses on individuality and inclusion, with brands like Savage X Fenty leading the charge. It also allows for comfort, if the wearer prefers, or goes the complete opposition direction with latex and leather. There’s even lingerie for men these days!
