The National Weather Service issued a warning to beachgoers to watch for sneaker waves and strong rip currents on Sunday along the California coast.

The waves — which could reach heights between three and six feet in height — will affect a long stretch of coastline from Monterey County all the way up to Sonoma County.

Meteorologist Jeff Lorber said that the swell comes from waves generated a far distance off the coast, likely from a storm developing over the Pacific Ocean. While the waves may not be as high as those that cause a High Surf Advisory, Lorber said that the swell can still pose a threat.

“People who are walking along the beach may be pulled into the water or toppled over,” he said. “People can get caught off guard.”

The warning from the NWS lasts until 10 p.m. tonight.
