OAKLAND — A 21-year-old man was in grave condition with life-threatening injuries Saturday after his speeding car crashed into a home in East Oakland, police said.

Responding officers found a Nissan Maxima had crashed into the home, at about 1:03 a.m. Saturday in the 5400 block of MacArthur Boulevard. The driver, an Oakland resident, was removed from the vehicle and taken to a hospital.

A passenger who fled the vehicle on foot after the crash is being sought by authorities. Police have not said if the passenger who fled was a man or woman.

Police said that, based upon the roadway design and witness statements, it appeared the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on MacArthur Boulevard near 55th Avenue, a sharply curved intersection at the western edge of the Mills College campus.

The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the home. The collision caused major damage to the structure of the residence, police said, but one inside the home was injured.

Police said it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in what happened. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
