Republic of Cake, the East Bay bakery known for gourmet cupcakes, is closing its doors in Orinda after 22 years.

But it’s not bad news. The Orinda bakery is moving to a bigger location in Danville, which will allow co-owner Lindsay Pirkle to expand the menu — hello, breakfast pastries — and offer private decorating parties. Republic of Cake’s last day at 2 Orinda Theatre Square is April 23, though the bakery will be open April 26 and 27 for pre-orders. Pirkle anticipates a mid-May opening for the new shop at 730 Camino Ramon in Danville.

When the bigger, expanded Republic of Cake opens — it is rougly 1,300 square foot with a few indoor and outdoor tables — some of the new menu items will include grab-and-go sandwiches and breakfast pastries, including danishes, croissants and muffins. Pirkle also plans on adding eclairs, cheesecakes and petit fours, that, like the current menu, rotate seasonally in flavor.

The current menu of cupcakes will remain, including flavors like funfetti, carrot cake, red velvet with cream cheese frosting and “the very messy brownie,” brownie cake filled with ganache topped with chocolate buttercream and chocolate sprinkles. Don’t miss Pirkle’s full-sized cakes and homemade cookies, like peanut butter and white chocolate macadamia.
