Democrat Abby Broyles has dropped out of the race for Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District following a highly-publicized scandal. Broyles allegedly became aggressively drunk during a slumber party where she berated middle school girls. Broyles said she became suicidal after her actions were exposed, and is now attempting to get her life back together with treatment.

On Feb. 11, Broyles attended a sleepover at her friend’s house that included several tween girls. Broyles allegedly became intoxicated and insulted the middle school girls.

Sarah Matthews – a mother of one of the girls at the slumber party – told KFOR-TV, “[My daughter] proceeded to tell me that Abby Broyles had been at the house and was very drunk and calling them all mfer’s, f’er this f’er that.”

“[Broyles] called somebody acne f’er, somebody Hispanic f’er, called my daughter judgey f’er for not wanting to sleep with a blanket that she cleaned up wine with,” Matthews added.

Broyles, 32, allegedly became so intoxicated during the tween slumber party that she puked on the shoes of one of the girls.

Matthews wrote on Twitter, “Not only did you scare and traumatize these beautiful girls with your words, you ruined a pair of their shoes with your vomit! (Which she saved up to buy with her own money!) Considering how much you bragged about how “rich and successful” you are to these children, surely you can afford to replace her shoes!”

Online news website NonDoc.com first reported the story about the Valentine’s weekend sleepover gone wrong.

When questioned about the accusations, Broyles claimed that she was out of town and the allegations were a “political attack” that was “cooked up.”

However, Broyles admitted on Thursday that she was at the slumber party.

“Last month, I made a mistake I deeply regret,” Broyles said in a statement. “As I admitted, I mixed alcohol and a medication I’d never taken before while under the same roof as a group of young women who looked up to me, and for that, I apologize from the bottom of my heart.”

Broyles announced that she would end her congressional campaign because of several factors, including “recent events,” “gerrymandering,” and “salacious right-wing clickbait.”

“Shortly after Abby announced her candidacy for CD-5, the Republican legislature egregiously gerrymandered the new district to prevent any democrat from winning. That reality combined with recent events that turned Abby into salacious right-wing clickbait have led the Broyles campaign to make this difficult decision and Abby to focus on her mental health,” the Broyles campaign stated.

In a post on Medium, Broyles claimed that she attempted to commit suicide.

“Everything was a blur. Physicians were talking amongst each other and occasionally to me, as an IV was stuck into my arm and a tube was shoved in my nose,” Broyles wrote. “That morning, March 2nd, after thirteen days of being the center of a hometown scandal that garnered national media attention, I drank heavily in my hotel room, more than 1,300 miles away in an effort to hide and took sleeping pills, anguishing in pain reading about myself on social media and in tabloid articles.”

Broyles revealed, “I am currently undergoing mental health treatment for severe anxiety and dependency on alcohol to cope.”
