SAN JOSE — A woman has died from injuries she suffered after a motorist hit her as she walked across McLaughlin Avenue over the weekend, police said, continuing a troublingly historic pace of roadway deaths in San Jose.

The collision was reported at about 6:40 p.m. Saturday on McLaughlin Avenue, when the driver of a 2015 Nissan Rogue SUV heading southbound hit the woman as she crossed the street near Idlewood Drive.

While the woman was described as having suffered serious injuries, police on Saturday initially stated that she had “stabilized.” But on Sunday, she died from her injuries. Her name has not been publicly released pending formal notification of her next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

Police said the driver stopped at the scene and was not suspected of any impairment.

The collision marked the city’s 20th traffic death of the year and the 11th involving a pedestrian who died. At the same point last year, seven roadway deaths had been recorded.

That pace puts 2022 far ahead of 2021, which saw a 25-year peak of 60 roadway deaths — also matched in 2015 and 2019 — of which 23 involved pedestrians.
