SAN JOSE – A driver was expected to be booked into Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after allegedly hitting and killing another driver Wednesday morning in San Jose, police said.

The crash was reported at about 8:05 a.m. near White Road and Almond Drive, San Jose police Sgt. Christian Camarillo said in a news release.

Camarillo said an investigation revealed that a 2002 GMC sport utility vehicle was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed on South White Road when it collided with a 2003 Toyota minivan near the intersection of Almond Drive. The Toyota was preparing to turn left onto South White Road from Almond Drive at the time of the crash.

The adult male driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. An adult female passenger in the Toyota was taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

The adult male driver of the GMC was also taken to a hospital with injuries that Camarillo described as not life-threatening.

Camarillo said excessive speed was a factor in the collision and the driver of the GMC will be booked into jail on the manslaughter charge once he is discharged from the hospital.

The death marked the city’s second roadway fatality of the week and the fourth overall of the year. On Tuesday, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a driver near Curtner and Canoas Garden avenues.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the most recent victim once it has been confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
