SAN JOSE — A motorcyclist was killed Friday night when he collided with a pick-up truck, was thrown off his motorcycle and struck by another vehicle, authorities said.

Officers responded to the scene near the Highway 87 on and off ramp at about 6:16 p.m.

The man, who was identified as 28-year-old Mitchell Moreno Jr., was traveling eastbound on Capitol Expressway at a high speed, attempting to split the number one and two lanes, according to San Jose police.

The motorcyclist struck a 2007 Chevrolet pick-up truck in the first lane and was thrown off his motorcycle. A 2020 Tesla Model Y traveling in the second lane then hit the motorcyclist.

Police said both drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated.

The crash is the 57th fatal collision and 59th person killed on San Jose roads. The city is nearing its all-time high for traffic fatalities — 60 — which was set in 2015.
