SAN JOSE — Crews on Friday afternoon battled a pair of residential fires in San Jose, authorities said.

The first blaze broke out around 2:50 p.m. at a home in the 1800 block of Stowe Avenue, near San Antonio Elementary School, and spread to a second residence in the 100 block of Heller Place, the San Jose Fire Department said in a social media post.

The fires were knocked down by 4:35 p.m., the fire department said in a follow-up post. A single-family home, a duplex and three outbuildings were damaged in the incident.

One person was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation, the fire department said.

Four people were displaced on Stowe Avenue and four people, two dogs and one cat were displaced on Heller Avenue. The Red Cross was summoned to the scene to provide assistance.

The public was asked to avoid the area while crews battled the fires. The San Jose Police Department and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. provided assistance during the incident.
