I’ve got my sister trained well. Whenever she stumbles upon an old car, she sends me pics and texts me saying, “I saw a 4-4-2 today!” or something like that. It’s been a while since she sent me anything, so I was delighted this past weekend when she stopped by Cooter’s in Virginia and showed me the automotive treasures within.
If you recall, actor Ben Jones played Cooter in the lovable television show “The Dukes of Hazzard.” After the show was cancelled in 1985, Jones ran for Congress in Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District. Though he lost, Jones had the opportunity for a rematch against the same (corrupt) incumbent and won by a landslide. He was ousted several years later, upon which he returned to Hollywood for several movie appearances, as well as two “The Dukes of Hazzard” reunions.
Towards the end of the 1990s, Jones and his wife moved to Virginia. In 1999, they created Cooter’s, a “The Dukes of Hazzard” museum and theme store in Sperryville. Today, there are three Cooter’s: Pigeon Forge and Nashville, Tennessee, and Luray, Virginia. The latter location also features Cooter’s Country Kitchen, where you can sample Rosco’s Steak & Cheese, Cletus’ Chicken Tenders, the Boss BLT, and Flash’s Favorite (a hot dog with fries or onion rings). You may be disappointed to learn Daisy’s Delight is homemade banana pudding.
For Dukes, kitsch, Mopar, and car fans alike who want to make a weekend of this, Cooter’s Luray is approximately a two-hour drive from both the nation’s capital and Richmond.
